Abstract

Microcredit was introduced as a financial inclusion plan in South Korea in the early 2000s after the financial crisis. The institutions which started the microfinance business began as non-governmental organizations. However they were not activated by lack of scale, manpower and experience. Nowadays microfinance shows signs of life as the government recently launched Korean microcredit models as part of pro-working class policies. So in this study, we took a look at historical reason for establishment of microcredit and types of loans at home and abroad. The concept of microcredit was established through the loan fund of the United Kingdom and Ireland with the financial resource of donation. This concept was specified by Venezuela's ACCION and Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. After that, state banks or credit unions took a role of microcredit institutions and large scaled microcredit institutionss extended their businesses into overseas markets. This is when microcredit started to spread all over the world. Microcredit in Korea has a relatively short 10 years of history. However, in addition to early NGO-typed microcredit institutionss, religious and the financial areas established experimental microcredit institutionss. Also we studied cases that various institutions made the microcredit business succeed or fail. The result suggests that ,to activate and keep sustaining the business, it's necessary to stay proper interest rates on loans, to improve independence of foundations, to secure professional manpower.
