Abstract

The generic term, Cloudy Mountains, in Korean, "unsando," refers to a painting style that is composed of summer scenes with low hills interspersed with clouds and fog. It was transmitted to Korea during the late Koryo period, although there are no extant paintings of this genre, except for a set of 6 paintings datable to the early Choson period of the late 15th century. The transmission can be traced only through the literary sources of the late Koryo. The second section traces the development of the Cloudy Mountains within the history of Chinese painting from the late Northern Song through the early Yuan dynasty. The third section deals with the literary sources, a few Buddhist paintings, the Cloudy Mountains attributed to the Koryo period, and the early Choson Cloudy Mountains. The analysis of how the multi-level notion of the Cloudy Mountains in China was adopted by Korean painters will reflect a pattern of cultural transmission from China to Korea at large. This study of the transmission of the Cloudy Mountains also attempts to illuminate the diplomatic and cultural interaction between China and Korea during the Song and Yuan period.
