Abstract
A Study of the Sacred Seven Buddhas in Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaeom Temple Oh Jin hee The statues of the Sacred Seven (Chiljon) enshrined at Gakhwangjeon Hall, Hwaeomsa Temple, famous for their large height of 3 meters, are widely regarded as masterpieces of late Joseon sculpture. First, I tried to pinpoint the date of production of the statues, patrons, participants and expenses. This was done using historic records related to a Gakhwangjeon renovation project, including a record of yeongsanhoe service. It is through this part of my research that I discovered this work of seven divinities to be the only one whose production was based on a yeongsanhoe record expressed in an altar painting of the 1700s. Second, I analyzed the work by comparing each of the seven divinities with other icons from the same period whose date of production is clearly presented. Third, I tried to work out the chronology and position of historical works of Joseon sculpture by researching the layout, proportion, forms and lines that characterize each work. Finally, I tried to capture the identity of the artists who made the Sacred Seven of Hwaeomsa Temple by looking at the form, style, artistic features and genealogy of the saengnanpa artists.
