Abstract
This research aims at analysing two ethical guidelines of European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers’Organisations(ECCO) and American Institute of Conservation for Historic and Artistic Works(AIC) in order to provide a useful framework of establishing Korean conservation ethics. The comparative analysis focused on two aspects: 1. definition of conservator(or restorer in few languages) and their professional works; 2. structures and description of ethical guidelines. In terms of definition, both guidelines of ECCO and AIC stress ‘conservator’as a experienced and educated profession with special knowledge and skills to execute their works for the preservation of cultural heritage for the present and future generations. Their professional works, according to the guidelines, includes conservation planning, scientific analysis, treatment, documentation, and preventive conservation. Both guidelines composed of three separate parts, yet the structures and the way of composing contents shares less similarities. ECCO’s professional guidelines describes code of ethics in the second part with simple description in defining principles whereas AIC’s one place code of ethics in the first part with overarching principles followed by guidelines for practice and commentaries with detailed explanation of each principles. Considering that ethical guidelines is not a set of rules to describe ‘to do’and ‘not to do’but a useful and applicable document to guide a conservator for a rational decision-making with a logical process of thought, Korean ethical guidelines should be descriptive similar to AIC’s structure of guidelines. Before establishing it, it is necessary to invite lots of discussions of various experts and related professions for selecting an appropriate terminology for conservator and their works and defining the profession, responsibilities, and the range of works. The guidelines, in addition, should use encouraging language rather than controlling and compelling one
