Abstract
This is a study on the Chest-inside Artifact relics of the wooden Amitabha Buddha statue at the Baekunsa-temple in Gwangyang, produced by sculptor monk ‘In-gyun(印均)’ in 1643. We were able to uncover several important facts that the Chest-inside Artifacts of this Buddha statue include 2 production prayer statements, a total of 9 volumes of the “Lotus Sutra”, 60 sheets of Darani, the Throat-bell container wrapped in Hwangchopokja, OhBangGyeong, and five-color thread, etc. First, it can be seen that the Baekunsa-temple wooden amitabha Buddha statue together with the Jangyeon-sa temple Seated Wooden Amitabha Buddha Statue at the time of production was produced and enshrined in a temple as a Triad. This is because the form and content of the production record of the Amitabha Buddha Statue in Jangyeon-sa temple, which has already been investigated, and the two production prayer statements enshrined in the Amitabha Buddha statue are almost identical. Through the production record, considering the fact that the purpose of producing the Buddha statue and Soyodang master Taeneung, Jeungmyeong, the production personnel and donators, especially the two statues, have the same style characteristics, it can be judged that the sculptor monk ‘In-gyun’ produced it at the same time. Second, the “Lotus Sutra” included in the Chest-inside Artifacts has a total of 9 volumes and 2 types, and the imprint and list of donations were recorded at the end of Volume 7, which are found to be important facts. The imprint was written as “(萬曆三十二年甲辰夏能仁庵開刊移鎭于双溪寺)”, and from this record, it was confirmed that it was a woodblock engraved at Neungin-am temple in 1604 (the 37th year of King Seonjo reign) and moved to Ssanggye-sa temple for storage. Third, we were able to check out the contents of the valuable and diverse Buddhist Chest-inside Artifacts from the 17th century such as about 60 sheets of a large amount of Darani, a cylindrical Throat-bell container wrapped in Hwangchopokja, Ohbobyeong, OhBangGyeong, and five-color thread. We were able to see that the Chest-inside Artifacts based on “Josanggyeong” were sufficiently realized. It would be significant that the shape enshrined with Ohbobyeong that is wrapped in fabric of the five colors and the OhBangGyeong made of copper from which the east is square, the south is triangular, the west is circular, and the north is half-moon shaped, inherited the style of the prehistoric era in a way that has been steadily developed since around the 15th century, and was implemented as Buddhist Chest-inside Artifacts, which show the typical form of the first period of the late Joseon Dynasty. In this way, the value and significance of this statue in this study can be said to be great in that the Chest-inside Artifact relics of the Baekunsa-temple wooden Amitabha Buddha statue well reflect the 17th century Buddha statue style and the situation in the Buddhist world at the time.
