Abstract
This study examined the existence of pluralistic ignorance in estimating diet issue and the influence of the media use and involvement on the perception of diet. The data of female college students were analyzed for this study. Findings indicate that (1) pluralistic ignorance occurs in estimating diet issue, namely that respondents tended to estimate other people’s attitude about diet more favorably than real attitude; (2) the internet use time predicts pluralistic ignorance positively, the use time of news and current event genre in TV predicts pluralistic ignorance negatively, and the use time of entertainment genre in internet predicts pluralistic ignorance positively;and (3) the respondent’s involvement on the perception of diet predicts pluralistic ignorance positively. As a conclusion, the process of diet-perception of young women and possible problem about it are discussed in the viewpoint of pluralistic ignorance. Especially, the influence of media in the process of diet-perception is discussed and health communication campaign about diet is proposed.
