Abstract
In this paper, we study the volatility forecasts in the US stock market based on GARCH-MIDAS(GARCH with the Mixed Data Sampling) model, which includes macroeconomic variables as information variables. The stock market volatilities are decomposed into short-term and long-term components, and domestic and foreign macroeconomic variables are included to model the long-term volatility. Our results show that the predictive power of the GARCH-MIDAS model including the information variables is superior to that of the widely used GARCH(1,1) model. In addition, the predictive power of the model using macroeconomic variables as information variables rather than the realized volatility was improved more. In particular, foreign macroeconomic variables such as crude oil prices and exchange rates, as well as domestic macroeconomic variables such as industrial production index and producer price index, have been found to contribute significantly to the low frequency volatility forecasts.
