Abstract
Most of the East Asian nations (China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam) have been strongly influenced not only by Buddhist culture but also Confucian culture. Nevertheless, as far as politics and economic affairs are concerned, Confucianism has been a very powerful socio-cultural force in all these countries since the middle ages. It stresses the importance of thrift, hard work, self-discipline, education, and well being of the people. These Confucian values are the key variables in explaining the economic performance of East Asian economies during the last several decades. And these values influenced the business activities even in ASEAN countries through the increasing interdependence in trade and investment between ASEAN and Confucian countries such as China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. This is the reason why East Asian countries must re-examine Confucian values as an ethos for economic development and as a common cultural denominator for East Asian economic integration. In this regard, this paper tried to examine the dormant role of Confucian values as a source of Asian Values, which may assume an important informal integrator in East Asian regional integration.
