1906년 순종의 가례는 조선 왕실이 제후국에서 황제국 의례로 변화하는 모습을 보여주는 특징을 지니고 있다. 그러면서 여전히 조선 왕실의 전통과 前例를 사용하는 이중적인 모습도 나타낸다. 가례에 참여하는 인원과 器皿의 대부분이 황제국의 면모를 드러내기보다는 조선 왕실의 전통을 보여주기 때문이다. 예컨대 內人들의 복장과 고위 관료들의 관복에서 가마와 기명의 구성까지 전례되던 양식을 답습하고 있다. 그럼에도 龍亭과 七鳳蓋 등의 황태자 의장과 대대 체제의 군대가 서구식 군복을 착용하고 군악대가 동원되는 모습은 황제국을 지향하는 근대국가의 이미지를 대외적으로 주목하게 하는 시각적 변화이다. 특히 1905년 러일전쟁 이후 대내외적으로 일본의 식민지적 침략 행태에 위축되어가던 대한제국의 威儀를 화려한 국가의례로 극복하고자 하는 심려도 나타난다고 해석할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
