조선시대 능지 연구 -『창릉지』를 중심으로 -

이 글은 한국학중앙연구원 장서각에 소장된 <昌陵誌>의 체제와 기록물로서의 가치를 검토하기 위해 작성되었다. 연구 방법으로는 우선 조선시대 능지의 기능과 함께 현황을 살펴보았고, 다음으로 <창릉지>가 작성된 배경과 그 구성 및 특징을 살펴보았다. ‘陵誌’는 왕릉의 수호와 제례에 관한 절차 및 왕릉 운영에 필요한 각종 규식을 기록해놓은 것으로, 왕릉 현장의 책임자였던 陵官에게는 없어서는 안 될 필수 지침서였다. 능지에는 왕과 왕비의 생애에 관한 공식적 기록 외에도 능에서 생성되는 각종 사안에 대한 현장감 넘치는 실제적 기록들이 생생히 묘사되어 있다. 또한 이들은 공식적 기록에서 볼 수 없는 내용들도 상당 부분 갖추고 있어 正史 위주로 편찬된 史書의 부족한 부분을 메워주는 역할도 하고 있다. <창릉지>는 조선 제8대왕인 예종과 안순왕후에 대한 祭享 및 창릉의 운영과 관련된 典例 및 故事를 기록해놓은 능지이다. 1796년(정조 20)에 작성된 <창릉지>는 원본의 형태로 남아있는 능지 중 이른 예에 속하며, 구성 형식 또한 온전한 체제를 갖춘 보기 드문 기록물이다. 더욱이 상편과 하편을 구성하고 있는 각 항목은 원칙과 이에 대한 실제를 보여주는 내용들로 기술되어 있어 서로 유기적 호응관계를 이루고 있다. 이러한 구성 방식은 다른 능지에서는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없는 것으로, 능지의 전형적 모델을 제시해준다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 현재 학계에서는 ‘儀軌’ 및 ‘謄錄’에 관한 연구는 상당히 진전되어 왔으나, 사료 또는 기록물로서 능지를 연구대상으로 삼은 예는 거의 전무한 편이다. 이런 점에서 이 연구는 왕릉 운영과 관련한 텍스트로서 능지의 가치를 새롭게 인식하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
This paper aimed to review the system and value of a documentary Changleungji (昌陵誌) that is collected in the Jangseogak of the Academy of Korean Studies. For the research, the researcher studied the functions and current status of Neungji (陵誌, royal tombs' records) in Joseon Dynasty, then checked the composition and characteristics of Changleungji and the background it was made in. As 'Neungji's contain the procedures related to the protections and ancestral rituals of royal tomb and various forms necessary for royal tomb management, they were one of essential guide for Neunggwan (陵官, tomb officer). Neungjis have official records on kings and queens' lives as well as vivid records about many matters occurred in the tomb. Besides, they have lots of unofficial informations, being a complementary good for official history books. Changleungji recorded the ancestral rituals for Joseon's 8th King Yejong and Queen Ansun as well as several model cases and historical events related to the management of Changleung. Changleungji, written in 1796 (Jeongjo's 20th year), is one of the earlier Neungjis that are remaining in the original copy and a rare documentary combining the whole components of Neungji. Each item composing the first volume and second volume shows principles and practices, making organic response each other. Such composition, seldom found in other Neungjis, would be a good model of Neungji. In current academic circle, studies on 'Uigwe (儀軌)' and 'Deungrok (謄錄)' have been done significantly. But little, if any, studies on Neungji as historical records or documentary have been done. In this point, this study will become a chance to understand the value of Neungji, the text related to the management of royal tomb.
