Abstract

This study conducted a survey between March and April 2024 targeting the general public in their 20s and 30s to explore factors affecting indirect trauma and PTSD symptoms due to the Itaewon disaster. The results of the regression analysis showed that women experienced more indirect trauma than men, and that relevance to the incident, degree of media exposure, negative emotions, and degree of shock significantly affected indirect trauma. On the other hand, social support contributed to alleviating indirect trauma. Factors affecting PTSD symptoms were identified as negative emotions through media, relevance to the incident, social emotional contagion, and childhood abuse experience. In particular, those who perceived the Itaewon disaster as the most painful event showed more severe PTSD symptoms. These results suggest a correlation between emotional distress due to media exposure and trauma, and emphasize the need for emotional support and trauma treatment for young people. This study suggests the importance of effective psychological intervention for indirect trauma and PTSD symptoms in disaster situations such as the Itaewon disaster.
