Abstract

In 1123, Seogung visited Goryeo as part of a diplomatic mission led by the envoy Noyunjeok and his deputy, Bumukgyeong. He compiled his journey in Goryeodokyung and dedicated it to Emperor Huizong. As a record of Goryeo’s appearance and the lifestyles of Goryeo people viewed through the eyes of a contemporary Song dynasty observer, this text is highly valued as an important source for the study of the maritime routes of the time, which lacks related materials. The text provides detailed descriptions of the shapes and vegetation of the islands visited, as well as stories passed down by the Goryeo people. The section between Gageodo and Gogunsangundo was the starting point of Goryeo coastal navigation, where the envoy Seogung and his mission crossed the West Sea to explore the coast of Goryeo. It is a section where the international route for Goryeo’s external trade and the domestic route for internal trade are connected. Based on the routes mentioned in the Goryeodokyung and previous research, two empirical investigations were conducted, and the results of the navigation survey, routes, and locations of islands were examined, centered on the Gageodo -Gogunsangundo section. During the section from Gageodo to Heuksando, it was confirmed that Seogung sailed on a route that passed through the south of Gageodo, then turned northwest between Taedo and Manjae Island. Regarding the location of some islands such as Baeksan, Wolseo, Bosal Island, and Jukdo, for which there were different opinions among researchers, attempts were made to determine their positions.
