Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-weeks' pilates circuit exercise on body fat, functional movement (FMS) and balance ability of middle-aged obese women and to use the results of this study as basic data of exercise prescription programs for obesity treatment. Thirty subjects of obese(>body fat 30% and >45 years old) were random assignment into one of two experimental groups, either pilates circuit exercise or weight circuit exercise. Body weight, body fat, FMS, static and dynamic balance ability were measured before and after 8 weeks of exercise, and the collected data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. In the results of the study, weight, body fat percentage, FMS, and static/dynamic balance ability showed significant changes in both groups before and after 8 weeks of exercise and pilates circuit exercise program group showed greater changes than weight circuit exercise program group. These results suggest that pilates circuit exercise program is effective in reducing body fat and improving FMS and balance ability in middle-aged obese women. It is also considered to be a safe and effective exercise program for the prevention and treatment of exercise injuries caused by excessive body weight load that can occur during exercise therapy of obese people. Subsequently, it is suggestion that further studies will be needed in terms of more diverse variables to determine how the pilates circuit exercise program affects the prevention and treatment of obesity.
