Abstract

Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine the drooling status and its severity and frequency in children with cerebral palsy and drooling symptoms. The Korean version of the Drooling Infants and Preschoolers Scale (K-DRIPS) was used for assessment. Methods : This study included 74 children with cerebral palsy aged 2~6 years who exhibited drooling symptoms; they were patients at two rehabilitation hospitals in Seoul. Drooling status and its severity and frequency, as well as the characteristics of children with cerebral palsy, were examined using the K-DRIPS. Differences in variables according to sex, age, premature birth, and gross motor skills were confirmed. Results : Children with cerebral palsy had difficulty controlling drooling in situations of prone position, fine motor activities, and moving around. Drooling was particularly frequent during activities and feeding. Significant differences were identified in drooling frequency (p = .019) and severity (p = .045) based on gender, as well as in sleep-related drooling frequency (p = .026) and severity (p = .003) based on age. In gross motor function levels, significant differences were found in drooling frequency (p = .005) and severity (p = .027) during activities, as well as in frequency (p < .001) and severity (p = .012) during feeding situation. Additionally, drooling frequency during activities (p = .030) and feeding (p = .019) varied significantly by cerebral palsy subtype. No significant differences were found based on premature birth status (p > 05). Conclusion : Children with cerebral palsy had difficulty controlling drooling in various situations. Because the ability to control drooling varies depends on the situation, accurate and systematic drooling evaluations should be conducted to provide appropriate interventions.
