Abstract

From early in the nineteenth century, Choseon dynasty's people has a outer conception that had been greatly influenced by China. Especially, Yi Hang-ro argued that, in Choseon, old cultural tradition and custom such as traditional world view, had been considered great values, and it had been impossible for cultural contact and conflicts between oriental and western world not to hinder from conservation of traditional orders. Conclusively he said, with a point of Chu-tzu's scholary attainments, Choseon's traditional culture couldn't have a harmony with western cultures. In the historical situation of western challenge, and, historical and national views intended to overcome cultural contact and conflict, "defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy"(wijeong cheoksa) thought and movement were formed on the ground of Yi Hang-ro' s national and educational views. Hwaseo' s national and educational views made it possible to form a theory about confrontation of reality called a theory for Conservate Nation and Exclude Foreign Countries so as to solve problems at that times and it was developed into the practical campaign for the saving his country. In this period, Hwaseo carried racial and national education into practice, so a theory about confrontation of reality according to conservation of a nation and hostility of foreign countries were presented. In this meaning, this study is supposed to make a concrete approach Hwaseo's educational view. Besides, it is a main purpose of this study that we know how H waseo' s practical educational ideas, that is to say, "conservate nation and exclude foreign countries(boguk yangee)" and "defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy" have developed into an academical logic in the situation formed by outer challenge. This analytic focus of this treatise is that, in the historical situation when Choseon had to turn into the modernistic society and conserve their own social and political systems, What aspect of Hwaseo's theory about confrontation of reality and practical movement have, and to which direction they control the society at that times. At last we can indicate that they took a great role in practical educational conception and academic research of truth. -
