성균의 의미(Ⅰ): “성균(成均)”에 대한 문헌 고찰과 새로운 해석 가능성 탐색

“성균”이라는 말은 우리나라에서 오랫동안 최고학부의 명칭으로 사용되어왔음에도 불구하고 이 개념이 지니는 기본 함의와 그 문화적 의의가 충분히 연구되지 않았다. 전통 및 현대 학계에 “성균” 및 이와 관련된 이름들에 대한 많은 오해와 억측이 존재하기 때문에 먼저 문헌적 고찰을 통해 “성균”이라는 말이 출현하는 전후 맥락을 검토하여 의미를 확정하고자 한다. “성균”이라는 말은 선진 시대의 문헌 가운데 단 두 군데 『주례⋅대사악』과 『예기⋅문왕세자』에 나타나는데 원문 자체에는 “성균”을 학궁으로 보아야 할 충분한 근거가 없다. 이 구절에 대한 중국의 역대 경전 주석가들의 견해를 검토한 결과 “성균”을 고대 학궁의 이름으로 보는 것은 근거가 불충분한 추론에서 기인하여 이후 중국 경학계의 통념이 되었음을 알 수 있다. “성균”을 원래 맥락에 충실하게 읽으면 고대 학궁이 아닌 “음악적 조화로 상징되는 도덕적 완성”의 의미로 보아야 한다. 이러한 결론은 유독 한국에서 지속적으로 최고학부의 명칭으로 선택해온 “성균”이라는 이름이 가지는 독자적인 철학적, 문화적 지향을 탐구하는 데 중요한 출발점이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to clarify the meaning of the term "Sungkyun,” which has been used as the name of the highest educational institute in Korea for a long time. Although this term explains Korean cultural identity, its basic implications and cultural significance have not been sufficiently explored. Since there are many misunderstandings about "Sungkyun” and related names in traditional and modern scholarship, I will first look at the literature in which the word "Sungkyun” first appeared and confirm the meaning of the word. In the history of Chinese Classical Studies, many scholars have endeavored to prove that the "Sungkyun” means the name of imperial university in early China. However, according to detailed literature analysis, "Sungkyun”is a musical metaphor that should be read in the symbolic meaning of Confucian moral perfection. This meaning of "Sungkyun" was later adopted as the name of the highest educational institute in successive Korean dynasties and continued to be used as Sungkyunkwan, a modern university, even today. This term contains a unique cultural aspect of Korean Confucian educational ideal.
