Abstract

We used a thermal imaging camera and a xenon lamp to reproduce W. Herschel’s infrared experiment. In detail, we compared the photo image and the thermal image of the spectrum, and analyze the distribution of the wavelength and the temperature in the spectrum. Our result was the same as Herschel’s, in other words, the highest temperature was measured at the position just outside the red edge in the spectrum. This phenomenon can be explained by the refractive index and a spectral energy density as a function of wavelength. Our calculation showed that the highest energy density at the infrared region was due to the fact that the deflection angle varied non-linearly with the wavelength, in other words that the lights in the infrared region condense in a narrow region when they refracted at the prism. We suggest that visualization of the existence of infrared light as demonstrated in our experiment using a thermal camera can be easily adopted as educational material or inquiry activities for students. We also found that liquid crystal sheets can be used as effectively as a thermal camera for this demonstration.
