Abstract
Wave-particle duality is one of the most perplexing concepts in quantum mechanics. The end goal of this experiment is to measure wave-particle duality of light quantitatively. Our basic experimental approach in this experiment is to attenuate a light source incident on a double slit to such a degree so as to insure single photons state at 32 ns time interval in our designed interferometer. We recorded the final diffracted individual photon signals by the electronic photon detector rather than the usual screen or EM CCD film; the arrival photons were detected by the photon counting photo multiplier tube. The signals were stored in computer electronically by the DAQ card and LabView software. Specifically, we checked the single photon state of incident light by using nuclear coincidence technique to show that there is a single photon in interferometer in 32 ns time interval. As a result, when the light intensity is attenuated down to our designed experimental single photon conditions in our interferometer, we obtained the double slit diffraction pattern electronically with success. Here we also present an experimental method that deals with light as a quantum level to students.
