Abstract
Elementary science textbooks in the 2015 revised science curriculum have been converted from the national textbooks to the authorized ones. In this study, we analyzed spatial thinking within the context of astronomical thinking, as implemented in six types of authorized textbooks, focusing on motion of the Earth and Moon in elementary science textbooks. The composition and content of the sub-units between textbooks and the inquiry activities were compared and analyzed. The study results are as follows. First, each authorized textbook consists of various investigations, and in particular, the exploration of the Earth's rotation is analyzed to have implemented spatial thinking in the most diverse ways. Numerous efforts were made to clarify the concept of orientation, often confusing for students, through observation. Additionally, instances of high-level spatial thinking were noted, including the ability to switch perspectives between an Earth-based and a space-based viewpoint. Secondly, the level of spatial thinking related to the Earth's rotation was developed more comprehensively compared to that for the Earth's revolution. Furthermore, from an Earth-based perspective, while diurnal movement is taught through direct observation, annual movement is depicted within a two-dimensional framework, represented as discontinuous seasonal constellations.
