예배는 영적이면서 문화적 사건이다. 사람들은 이 중 한 쪽을 강조하지만, 이것은 선택의 문제가 아니라 적절한 연결의 문제다. 달리 말하자면, 예배의 내용은 초문화적인 것, 즉 어떤 상황에서든 불변하는 것이지만, 그 표현은 상황에 따라 달라지는 문화의 문제가 된다. 문화에는 두 차원이 있다. 하나는 문화행위의 주체인 사람의 사고방식과 삶의 방식이고, 다른 하나는 문화행위의 도구인 매체다. 그런데 우리나라에서 문화는 주로 후자와 연결된다. 그런 만큼 문화에 대한 논의의 중심에는 매체에 대한 논란이 자리 잡는데, 이 논란은 종종 매체에 대한 종교적 또는 윤리적 가치에 대한 것이다. 매체와 관련된 문제를 제대로 해결하기 위해서는 문화적 의미라는 관점에서 문제를 다루어야 한다. 문화적 의미는 어떤 것이 가지는 원래 의미외에 그것이 사람들의 삶에 접촉되면서 가지는 의미, 즉 상황 속에서 띠게 되는 이차적 의미다. 이 의미는 지역마다, 문화권마다 다르다. 이런 의미에서 문화상대주의가 성립된다. 문화상대주의를 받아들이는 것은 진리의 절대적인 차원을 포기한다는 뜻이 아니라, 변함없는 것을 다양한 상황에 맞게 표현하자는 것이다. 이 관점의 정당성은 성서를 통해 확인할 수 있는데, 그 중 한 예가 구약에 나타나는 예배문화의 변천 과정이다. 그리고 이 과정에는 기존의 것과 새로 일어난 것의 결합이 있었다. 지금의 한국교회의 예배에도 같은 현상이 일어나고 있다. 1980년대 말부터 현대의 대중음악을 중심으로 한 예배문화가 새로 도입되면서 예술음악을 중심으로 하는 전통적인 예배 문화와 공존하게 되었는데, 이런 상황에 응답하기 위해 어떤 교회는 그 둘을 결합한 통합예배 형식을 받아들이고, 어떤 교회는 시간대를 달리하여 여러 형식을 나란히 두는 범교파적 형식을 택한다. 교회가 이런 시도를 할 때 필요한 것은 예배 영성을 유지하면서 교인들의 상황에 맞는 문화적 표현을 찾는 것이다. 이 문제의 해법에 빛을 던져주는 것이 초기 한국교회의 `ㄱ자 예배당`이다.
Abstract
Worship is an event with two dimensions, spiritual and cultural. People often highlight one or the other, but what matters is not selection but proper relation. In other words, while the content of worship can be supra-cultural or context-free, its expression is a matter of culture, which is changing according to its environments. Culture has two aspects. One is the mindset and lifestyle of human beings as agents of cultural activities, and the other is the media or tools of such activities. In Korea, however, culture is mainly considered a matter of media. Eventually debates on culture very often involve issues related to the media of cultural activities, particularly religious or ethical values of the media. Those issues can be properly treated in terms of cultural meaning. When something comes in contact with human life, it gets a meaning that differs from its original meaning, a secondary meaning shaped in a particular context. It is not universal but regional. This constitutes the ground of cultural relativism. Accepting cultural relativism does not necessarily mean abandoning the absoluteness of truth; it means searching for a proper way of expressing it in a particular context. The Old Testament illustrates this through its depiction of the changes of worship culture; and these changes include a fusion of the old and the new. The Korean church is now witnessing a similar phenomenon. A new type of worship that heavily involves contemporary popular style of music was introduced in late 1980s, and now coexists with traditional worship that uses artistic music; and as an attempt to respond to this cultural confluence, certain churches has accepted what is now called blended worship, a combination of the two types of worship, while others follow a pan-denominational way, in which a church allows various types of worship. Any church in such a response needs to find cultural expressions that retain the spirituality of worship and reflect the life situation of its congregation. An example that casts light on this issue is a type of sanctuary in the early period of the Korean church, one that has an annex room for women.
