Abstract
In this paper, Augustine compares the idea of compassion for humans in De civitate Dei with the Stoic’s tolerance and seeks to understand Augustine’s understanding of compassion. Augustine famously attacks the Stoic denigration of compassion in De Civitate Dei 9.5, and this comes as part of his larger en- gagement with the Stoic theory of affectivity in De Civitate Dei 8.17, 9.4–5, and 14.8–9. But it is rather difficult to tell just where he stands in relation to the Stoics, given that he employs Stoic criteria for evaluating emotions, as well as Stoic distinctions and definitions, while chastising the Stoics. For this purpose, we will centrally examine Augustine’s De Civitate Dei and Seneca’s On Clemency to see how Stoic under- standing was appropriated or rejected in Augustine’s under- standing of compassion, justice, and human dignity. Through this process, we will be able to confirm that Augustine’s explanation of compassion developed the content lacking in Seneca’s ethics of mercy in a Christian way.
