Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to identify core medicinal herbs and prescription patterns used in Internal Medicine on Heart System (IMH), with the goal of enhancing curricular integration and instructional effectiveness across IMH, Herbology, and Herbal Formula Science. Methods A combination of frequency analysis and network analysis was applied to analyze individual herb usage and herb pair relationships in IMH formulas. Result Frequently used herbs, high-centrality herbs, and key herb pairs were identified. Zingiberis Rhizoma(生薑) was the most frequently used herb and also exhibited the highest centrality within the network. The most frequent herb pairs were Zingiberis Rhizoma-Zizyphi Fructus, Angelicae Gigantis Radix-Cnidii Rhizoma, and Zingiberis Rhizoma-Citri Unshius Pericarpium. Network analysis revealed four major herbal communities. Conclusion This study suggests that integrating network analysis with traditional methods enables identification of essential herbs and prescription structures. The findings can serve as foundational data to support vertically integrated education between basic and clinical subjects in Korean Medicine.
