This essay examines the relation between thought and being in Hegel’s Logic. In my view, Hegel’s speculative logic is not just logic but also ontology: it is the study of being, as well as thought. In the course of such logic the indeterminate being, with which we begin, proves to be the realm of finite things and objects, and eventually nature, that surrounds us. In speculative logic, therefore, we do not first encounter being over against us and then somehow reach out and bring this being to mind; but we first bring indeterminate being to mind and then discover that such being itself takes the form of the world about us. This essay also examines the similarities and differences between speculative logic and pre-Kantian metaphysics and the relation between that logic and Kantian critique. It concludes with a consideration of the differences between my reading of Hegel’s Logic and that presented by Robert Pippin in his Hegel’s Idealism (1989). This section of the essay develops and also corrects some of the things I say about Pippin’s interpretation of Hegel’s Logic in my book, The Opening of Hegel’s Logic (2006).
