Abstract
Based on the design characteristics derived through a case analysis of sustainable family-look brands, this study aimed to develop 1) sustainable family-look designs using eco-friendly materials, waste traditional Korean clothes, and waste denim, and 2) a unique, modern family-look design that fuses modern elements of waste denim with traditional elements of waste traditional Korean clothes. The goal was contributing to reducing the environmental impact and sustainability of the fashion industry. Regarding methodology, a literature review, case study, and real production were conducted in parallel. A total of 10 family looks, including for companion animals, were designed through a case analysis of 10 selected domestic and foreign sustainable family-looks-related brands. Based on the analysis of sustainable family looks, three concepts of “couple,” “similar,” and “minime” were designed and produced in basic, casual, and unique styles using sustainable materials (e.g., waste denim and waste Korean clothes). The study confirmed that a sustainable family look design using waste clothing can contribute to solving waste problems in the fashion industry and reduce its environmental impact. Ways to simultaneously pursue environmental responsibility, design value, and a bond between brand and families are provided, and it is shown how modern and traditional trends can be harmoniously fused with limited materials. The study depicts the feasibility of sustainable fashion, contributing hence to the spread of value consumption awareness among value consumers and the development of the fashion industry.
