초록

Background: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is characterized by block ed blood flow to the femoral head, resulting in necrosis of bone tissue. Joint-preserving strategies are prioritized in clinical management when diagnosing AVN for the first time. Surgical treatment for AVN poses complications, risks, and uncertain prognoses. While a few case reports suggest the benefits of nonsurgical Korean treatments for AVN, more evidence is needed. This study reports on the effectiveness of Korean medicines, including Mabalgwanjeol-tang, in managing AVN symptoms. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old male patient diagnosed with AVN was hospitalized for 11 days and treated with Mabalgwanjeol-tang, Jakyakgamcho-tang, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture. Buttock and lower extremity pain were assessed using the numeric rating scale (NRS), EuroQoL-5 Dimension (EQ-5D), and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). After 11 days of treatment, the NRS for buttock and lower extremity pain decreased from 5.0 to 3.0 and 6.0 to 4.0, respectively, and ODI scores decreased from 55.56 to 42.22. EQ-5D scores increased from 0.519 to 0.719. Conclusion: These results suggest that buttock pain and lower extremity pain associated with AVN can be alleviated through Korean medical treatment, including Mabalgwanjeol-tang.
