초록
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of nurses in geriatric hospitals in applying physical restraints to older adults with dementia. Methods: For this qualitative study, in-depth, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 10 nurses between September 2023 and November 2023. Data were analyzed using a conven tional content analysis approach. Results: The following four categories with nine subcategories were derived: intense struggles with problematic behaviors, realities surrounding physical restraint use, strenuous effort in ad verse conditions, and reflection through restricted lives of patients. Conclusion: These findings underscore the necessity for developing pragmatic guidelines and targeted training programs to reduce reliance of dementia pa tients on physical restraints and for alleviating operational challenges faced by nurses in geriatric hospital settings.
